10 June 2010

Dear Ramblers Club Members

My name is Joseph Millar and I am a year 13 student of Aquinas College studying at NCEA level 3. I am also the eldest of six children of David and Bernadette Millar.

I have a talent in sprinting and am very excited to have been selected to represent New Zealand at the IAAF World Junior Championships at Moncton, Canada in July. The biggest hurdle is in the costs involved, $8000 at this stage including a preliminary competition in Vancouver. Athletics New Zealand through SPARC have promised $5000, so there is more to raise in a reasonably short time. I am writing to a number of individuals and organisations asking for financial assistance.

Am I worth it?

I have been serious about athletics for nearly three years and in this time I have been fortunate to be coached by Mike Corboy who has helped my 100m time reduce from 13s to 10.74s and my 200m time from 26s to 21.51s. I am the NZ Club and NZ Secondary Schools Champion and currently hold three NZ records.

Some of my latest achievements are as follows,

26th March 2010: Gold in the m19 100m in 10.74s at the New Zealand Nationals in my 1st year of the grade as a 17 year old

28th March 2010: Gold in the m19 200m in 21.60s at the New Zealand Nationals also in my 1st year

28th March 2010: Bronze in the m19 4x100m relay at the New Zealand Nationals after receiving the baton in 7th place

20th April 2010: Gold in the Senior Boys 100m in 10.99s at the North Island Secondary School Champs

21th April 2010: Gold in the Senior Boys 200m in 21.80s at the North Island Secondary School Champs

20th April 2010: Gold in the Senior Boys 4x100m relay at the North Island Secondary School Champs 30m down from next runner

Also, since the World Youth champs last year, I have become a level 4 carded New Zealand athlete and broken 4 New Zealand records:

The M16 100m record- 10.80s, the NZ 1-2-3-400m medley relay record twice, and the M18 4x400m record.

What can I do in return?

I am aware that I do not have a variety of things I can do to show my appreciation but anything that I can do I will. I will definitely keep you informed both during the World Champs and afterwards. I am open to suggestions.

Any amount would be gratefully accepted. I would be happy to come and meet you if you wish to discuss details

Could any sponsorship/donation be sent to my School addressed: The Principal, Aquinas College, 183 Pyes Pa Road, RD3, Tauranga 3173

Yours Sincerely,

Joseph Millar
